When seen on the skull without the soft tissues, these two anatomical landmarks can be seen to communicate with one another. The fossa is shaped irregularly and is situated below and medial to the zygomatic arch. It is not fully enclosed by bone. The fossa infratemporalis is located inferomedial to the zygomatic arch and deep to the messeter muscle and ramus of the mandible. The infra temporalfossa is connected superiorly to the temporal fossa and through the pterygotemporal fissure to the pterygopalatine fossa.
